Higher Ground

I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:14).

When a town or city is situated deep in a valley,  its real beauty is not seen until we climb a high hill and look out over the entire area.  This is said to be true of Bethlehem, the city where our Lord was born.  It was this scene that inspired the songwriter to pen the words, “O Little Town of Bethlehem.”

This is also somewhat true of the city where the Back to the Bible Broadcast is located.  Coming in from almost any direction you must reach the top of a hill before you can really see the city.  Traveling at night everything looks dark and drab until you reach the top of the slope.   Then, and only then, the lights of the city blaze out with a “welcome home” message.  They have been shining all evening, but they are not visible until you reach higher ground.

Somewhat in this same manner God expects us to come out from the valley situations of life, climb the highest peaks and reach mountaintop experiences with Him.  This does not mean that we can go from the valley to the hill in one easy step.  “New heights” are reached only after meeting and conquering spiritual opposition.  It is only when we become discontented with the valley of doubts and fears and desire to live above the world and its sin that we strive to reach the higher ground.  It is then that we near the peak.

When we finally “scale the utmost heights,”  We say with the songwriter: “Lord, plant my feet on higher and higher ground until at last I reached my goal and my heavenly reward.”
