He Leadeth Me

He Leadeth Me

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.  (Isaiah 43:2)
Sometimes it’s difficult to see, but God does lead the Christian in every situation.  What a wonderfully blessed thought—in every situation.  Whatever we do wherever we go, God still leads.  In those everyday tasks?  Yes, “whate’er” we do.  In those unpleasant places?  Yes, “where’er” we be—“still ‘tis God’s hand that leadeth me.”
All of our pathways are not paved smoothly, nor are they lines with fragrant flowers.  In fact, sometimes the scenes are very gloomy.  Have you had a day recently when everything seemed to go wrong?  Remember, He leads, not only in our trying experiences, but through them.
Some days are so very troublesome.  We feel tossed around though we were in turbulent waters.  Other days prove to be clam, peaceful and refreshing.  But in either or both situations, God’s wonderful hand still leads.
Job witnessed the Lord’s leading through suffering.  God led Daniel through a den of vicious lions.  The children of Israel were sent through deep and treacherous waters.  God led, not only in, but through all of these situations.
The Lord took John Bunyan through long years in the dreary prison cell and David Livingstone through animal-infested jungles.  But He led.
The situations you face may not be easy, but all are within God’s control.  Like a fighting soldier who faces the stress and strain of war, the commanding officer continues to lead on.
And then finally, time runs out; our earthly walk and work are completed.  Now, through “death’s cold wave” God leads again, but this time He leads His faithful followers—home.

Higher Ground

I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:14).

When a town or city is situated deep in a valley,  its real beauty is not seen until we climb a high hill and look out over the entire area.  This is said to be true of Bethlehem, the city where our Lord was born.  It was this scene that inspired the songwriter to pen the words, “O Little Town of Bethlehem.”

This is also somewhat true of the city where the Back to the Bible Broadcast is located.  Coming in from almost any direction you must reach the top of a hill before you can really see the city.  Traveling at night everything looks dark and drab until you reach the top of the slope.   Then, and only then, the lights of the city blaze out with a “welcome home” message.  They have been shining all evening, but they are not visible until you reach higher ground.

Somewhat in this same manner God expects us to come out from the valley situations of life, climb the highest peaks and reach mountaintop experiences with Him.  This does not mean that we can go from the valley to the hill in one easy step.  “New heights” are reached only after meeting and conquering spiritual opposition.  It is only when we become discontented with the valley of doubts and fears and desire to live above the world and its sin that we strive to reach the higher ground.  It is then that we near the peak.

When we finally “scale the utmost heights,”  We say with the songwriter: “Lord, plant my feet on higher and higher ground until at last I reached my goal and my heavenly reward.”

Dr. Wiersbe & his Wife
Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe (the former General Director and Bible Teacher for Back to the Bible) has mined the Psalms for their riches.  He has traced the thinking of godly men and followed them into greater depths of understanding.  He has devoted much of his life to Bible study and meditation.  And now, in this devotional book he offers you nuggets of pure gold.

Prayer Praise & Promises : A Daily Walk Through the Psalms is based on Dr. Wiersbe’s radio ministry and his cassette series, Dyna Moments.  His personal reflections and insights help make each devotional fresh and relevant.

It’s a book that you’ll want to savor one day at a time.  Ponder its truths and apply them to your life.  You’ll be the richer for it.

In the foreword  Dr. Woodrow Kroll, President Back to the Bible Intl. wrote:

Dr. Wood
“The Psalms have always held a special place in the affection of Israel.  The people of God rejoiced and lamented together by singing the Psalms.  The early Christians discovered the Psalms to be an integral link to their heritage as well.

A psalm was the expression of joy uttered by Augustine at his conversion, and a psalm was the consolation on  his lips as he lay upon his death bed.  Chrysostom comforted himself in exile by quoting the Psalms.  John Hus had a psalm on his lips as he was burned at the stake Reciting a psalm, Luther entered the Diet of Worms, prepared to defy the Church and stand by faith alone.

But the Psalms have meant much more to us than affection or motivation.  They also have been a significant source of inspiration.  A. C. Gabelein used to say, “A psalm a day keeps worry away.”  Many of us have found the Psalms to be an excellent source of comfort, of courage, strength.

Strength and hope for our spiritual journey is the goal of Warren Wiersbe in this daily devotional on the Psalms, and he succeeds very well. Writing in his own practical and interesting style, Dr. Wiersbe brings us to the banquet table and serves a heaping portion of God’s blessing and strength through each psalm.  Every reader will be blessed but more than that, every reader will be instructed, motivated, inspired and challenged.
Here you will find daily food in abundance—good food, tasty food, food to fuel your Christian life.  If a psalm a day does keep worry away, who of us can afford to be without one?  This devotional good will ensure that your minimum daily Psalms requirement is met.  Bon appétit!

Read a portion from the book:

Preface To God’s Hymnal
Have you ever read the preface to the hymnal used in your church?  Few people ever do.  The preface to God’s hymnal (the Book of Psalms) is Psalm 1.  It begins with a word we often use—blessed.  Nowhere does Scripture tell us that God blesses programs or promotions.  But it does teach that He blesses individuals.  He blessed Abraham so he might be a blessing to others.  And He blesses us so we might bless others.

What you delight in is what will direct your life, so be careful what you enjoy.  The blessed person delights in the Law of the Lord (v.2).  He delights so much in the Word of God that he meditates on it during the day.  Meditation is the soul what digestion is to the body.  It means assimilating the Word of God.

The blessed person is like a tree (v.3).  A tree has roots.  The most important part of your life is your “root system.”  Don’t be like the  ungodly, who are like chaff (v. 4).  Chaff doesn’t have roots.  Don’t be like the  ungodly, who are like chaff (v.4).   Chaff doesn’t have roots.  It is blown away by every wind that comes along.  Your root system is important because it determines your nourishment.  It also determines your stability and your strength when the storm comes and the wind starts to blow.

People can’t see your root system, but God can.  Praying and meditating on the Word of God will cause your roots to go down deep into His love.

God delights in blessing His children.  But we must prepare ourselves for His blessings by first appropriating the resources He has given us.  Delight in the Word of God and feed on it. But do more than, occasionally read the Word; meditate on it constantly.  Make it your source of spiritual nourishment, and God will bless you with strength and stability.
